“As a Palestinian, my very existence is political,” said Saint Levant in an interview in late 2024, shortly after releasing his debut album, DEIRA. Although his conception of pop is as global as that of other non-Anglo-Saxon stars such as Mahmood, Burna Boy, Stromae or Amaarae, the roots of his music cannot be understood without the geographical and cultural context in which Marwan Abdelhamid was born and raised.
Born in Jerusalem during the Second Intifada to a Franco-Algerian mother and a Serbian-Palestinian father, Saint Levant spent seven crucial years of his childhood in Gaza, which is why his songs are imbued with both the musical traditions and the suffering of the Palestinian people.
This is how, step by step – particularly since the viral success of ‘Very Few Friends’, a single in which he alternated between Arabic, English and French – Abdelhamid has become a voice for the Palestinian reality around the world. An honourable role he will champion this coming autumn in Barcelona and Madrid: he will play on 28th November at Razzmatazz and on 30th November at La Riviera.
